Magia LONDYŃSKIEGO METRA - The Tube and its magic

Dzisiaj o londyńskim Metrze. Jako że mam przyjemność znać chyba największego fana The Tube, to właśnie Jego poprosiłam o napisanie tekstu na ten temat.

Today about the London Underground. I'm lucky to know probably the biggest fan of The Tube, so it was obvious to me to ask him if he want to write a text about it.

Moim zdaniem najlepszą atrakcją Londynu jest London Underground, jak dla mnie, to nie ma bardziej klimatycznego miejsca. Metro w Londynie jest jak krwiobieg w ludzkim ciele. Bez Tuby miasto pogrążyłoby się w chaosie. Wystarczy spojrzeć co się dzieje podczas strajku metra ;). Może od początku.

Metro w Londynie zostało otwarte 10 stycznia 1863 roku przez spółkę Metropolitan Railway (stąd dziś Metropolitan Line). Początkowo pociągi kursowały między Paddington a Farringdon. Decyzja o budowie podziemnej kolejki zapadła już w roku 1854. Z upływem czasu i otwierania nowych linii przesiadanie się między nimi było dość uciążliwe, ponieważ na każdej linii obowiązywały inne bilety spowodowane obecnością różnych operatorów  linii. Dlatego na początku XX wieku, gdy metro w Londynie liczyło już cztery linie, rozpoczął się proces konsolidacji spółek, aby ułatwić pasażerom życie :) Powstawały kolejne linie, metro rozrastało się w ekspresowym tempie. Do dziś powstało ich 11:

-Metropolitan Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem purpurowym, ma długość 67 km

-District Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem zielonym, ma długość 64 km

-Northern Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem czarnym, ma długość 58 km

-Waterloo&City Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem morskim, ma długość 2 km, jest to najkrótsza linia, łączy ze sobą stację Waterloo z centrum Londynu

-Central Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem czerwonym, ma długość 74 km i jest najdłuższą linią w systemie

-Bakerloo Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem brązowym, ma długość 23 km

-Piccadilly Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem ciemnoniebieskim, ma długość 71 km

-Circle Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem żółtym, ma długość 22 km

-Victoria Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem jasnoniebieskim, ma długość 21 km

-Jubilee Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem srebrnym, ma długość 36 km

-Hammersmith & City Line zaznaczona na mapie kolorem różowym, ma długość 14 km.

In my opinion the best attraction in London is the London Underground. I find it to be the place with the best atmosphere in London. The Underground is like a bloodstream, without The Tube the city would sink into chaos, like when Tube strikes occur. Perhaps I should start from the beginning.

London Underground was opened the 10th of January 1863 by Metropolitan Railway (that's from we have the Metropolitan Line today). At the beginning trains were going from Paddington to Farringdon. The decision to build a subway system was taken in 1854. That time passengers had some problems with changing the lines because trains were operated by different companies and people needed single tickets for every line. That's why at the begining of 20^th century, when the Tube  had four lines, authorities decided to make one big company with encompassing all the lines. The number of lines has increased to the eleven lines we see today.

-Metropolitan Line, signed on a map in purple, is 67 km long

-District Line, signed on a map in green, is 64 km long

-Northern Line, signed on a map in black, is 58 km long

-Waterloo&City Line, signed on a map in sea blue, it is 2 km long and it's the shortest line of the Tube, it connects Waterloo Station with the centre of London

-Central Line, signed on a map in red, is 74 km long and it's the longest line of the Tube

-Bakerloo Line, signed on a map in brown, is 23 km long

-Piccadilly Line, signed on a map in dark blue, is 71 km long

-Circle Line, signed on a map in yellow, is 22 km long

-Victoria Line, signed on a map in light blue, is 21 km long

-Jubilee Line, signed on a map in grey, is 36 km long

-Hammersmith & City Line, signed on a map in pink, is 14 km long.

Linie są podzielone na dwa typy ze względu na budowę tuneli, sub-surface czyli tunele na liniach Metropolitan, District, Circle i Hammersmith&City, są to tunele budowane metodą odkrywkową, nie są dość głębokie (maksymalnie do 8 metrów pod ziemią). Drugim rodzajem tuneli są tunele deep level, te są położone głębiej, najgłębszy punkt położony jest na Northern Line i jest to stacja Hampsted (59 metrów głębokości). Co ciekawe, tylko 45% torów położonych jest pod ziemią ;)

The Tube lines are divided into two types. The first one is a sub-surface what means that the tunnels are not so deep (max 8 meters under the ground) - (Metropolitan, Circle, District and Hammersmith&City Lines), The second one is a deep level, and they are simply deep. The deepest point is on the Norther Line at Hampsted station (59 meters under the ground). What is interesting, is that only 45% of the tracks are under the ground.

Metro w Londynie padło celem ataków terrorystycznych z 7 lipca 2005 roku. Terroryści wysadzili się w:

- pociągu Circle Line między Aldgate a Liverpool Street

- pociągu Circle Line między Edgware Road a Paddington

- w pociągu Piccadilly Line między King's Cross a Russel Square

Doszło również do wybuchów na stacjach Oval, Warren Street i Shepherd’s Bush. Dziś na stacjach Aldgate, Edgware Road i King's Cross wiszą tabliczki upamiętniające osoby, które zginęły w tym zamachu.

 London Underground became the object of terrorist attacks in7/7/2005. Terrorists blew up in:

- Circle Line train between Aldgate and Liverpool Street

- Circle Line train between Edgware Road and Paddington

- Piccadilly Line train between King's Cross and Russel Square.

There were also explosions on Oval, Warren Street and Shepherd's Bush stations. Nowadays, on Aldgate, Edgware Road and King's Cross stations there are memorials for people who died in those attacks. 

Gdybym miał wybrać swoją ulubioną linię miałbym duże problemy. Każda jest wyjątkowa na swój sposób. Każda różni się od drugiej. Do moich ulubionych linii należą: Jubilee Line, Victoria Line, Central Line, Piccadilly Line i Metropolitan Line.

If I have to choose my favourite line I would have a big problem. To my favorite belongs: Jubilee Line, Victoria Line, Central Line, Piccadilly Line and Metropolitan Line.
